Viking Supercaps, a must-have for IoT systems

Viking Supercaps used as "back-up power" provide uninterruptible backup power to control the shutdown of IoT systems.

The IoT world is advancing by leaps and bounds and we see this after experiencing a growing demand not only for our antennas and communications modules, but also for energy storage elements such as batteries of various chemistries or supercapacitors which are, without a doubt, an emerging product that is becoming increasingly competitive given their advantages over batteries.

Requirements for this type of project:

Generally, IoT systems are disconnected from the power grid and need an element that works as a power supply when the main power supply disappears, to ensure a controlled shutdown thus avoiding the corruption of memory and/or other system components.

This is the case of applications of some of our customers: smart city lighting, access control and smart locks, energy and water telemetry, climate controllers for farms or domestic electric vehicle chargers among others.

Project solutions:

The Eurotronix engineering team has recently advised several of our customers on supercaps, which have a high capacity (F) and generally have a higher C than many batteries because they can deliver high currents in a short time and charge very quickly. In addition, they have very low leakage current which causes them to discharge very slowly in the quiescent state.  The monitoring of their parameters is simple given their thermal behavior, their useful life, and their high degree of efficiency.

The SC series of "Combined type supercapacitor" from Viking is very popular with our technical team because the voltage range is 3.3V / 5V (something widely common in embedded systems) and the capabilities they offer perfectly solve the problem of backup power.

Some of the technical specifications that stand out from the series we work with the most are:

The use of supercaps for many applications is becoming more and more common due to their functionality and specifications. In this case, CR2032 batteries were replaced. This change, in addition to gaining in usability, reduced the environmental impact since CR2032 batteries are exhausted and must be recycled. Supercaps, on the other hand, have a much longer life, are rechargeable and do not deteriorate, which has a positive impact on maintenance costs.
