Project requirements
Our client is a company specialized in the design and manufacture of customized electronic products for multiple sectors and had to design a smoke extractor hood for kitchens, which at the same time was prepared to extinguish fires. In this case, it was required to operate a 12V / 8W solenoid valve to mechanically open the passage of the extinguisher, making it come into operation and discharging the relevant fluid in case of emergency.
In order to energize the solenoid valve it was necessary a step up converter capable of providing 12V and at least 2A at the output to supply the peak current demanded by the solenoid at the time of activation.
In turn, as the load is inductive, the power stage to be designed had to be prepared for the dynamics of the system; therefore, it is crucial in any boost converter to take into account the limit current that the internal switch of the converter can handle.
Study of the solution
At Eurotronix we studied the project and saw that the MP3429GL alternative from the supplier Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) was the right integrated to meet the needs described. The customer was supplied with all the necessary information to evaluate the proposal and, after receiving his approval, samples and evaluation boards were provided for testing.
The result was successful, and the customer decided to implement the solution proposed by Eurotronix in their production.
The Part Number MP3429GL is a high-efficiency synchronous boost converter whose internal switch supports currents up to 21.5A. It is suitable for loads consuming up to 30W (with peaks of 40W) and can regulate an output voltage of up to 16V, which makes it ideal for this specific application.
