MLCC Market Situation

The global shortage of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) and longer delivery times through distribution channels is an increasingly common situation. Although manufacturers are trying to address this imbalance in the market, many analysts agree that delivery times will not return to their previous levels until 2020. Due to the dramatic increase in global demand for MLCC, particularly in the telecommunications and automotive markets, there is currently a large gap between supply and demand.

Since the second half of 2017, the company PSA, from the Walsin group, has been our leading supplier to alleviate the shortage situation in the MLCC market. Together with this supplier, we have managed to provide a solution for our customers, enabling the continuity of the production plans with the least possible impact on delivery times and prices.

PSA’s present forecast delivery times are 12 to 36 weeks. The largest formats, such as 1210, 1206, and 1812 for the capacitance value of 105, 106, 107 and 226 face a critical shortage. However, this situation does not arise in small formats and high-voltage series.

What’s more, an alternative has been found with conductive polymer aluminium solid capacitors, commonly known as polymer capacitors, which can replace MLCC components in many applications and offer performance benefits.

In general, polymer capacitors provide commercial and technical advantages such as a higher leakage current index than other solid or non-solid electrolytic capacitors, offering higher capacitance values than MLCCs, space saving due to component reduction, high ripple currents, high capacitance without voltage reduction and high stability against frequency and temperature variation.

Eurotronix provides our customers with the Capxon lines being a leading manufacturer of polymer capacitors, highlighting especially their high technological capacity, manufacturing capacity and guaranteed quality.
